Owning a business comes with a giant list of responsibilities, but the most important task on that list is ensuring the safety of employees. Your employees are the lifeblood of your company. Without them, you wouldn’t have anything. And that is why you need to keep them and ensure that the space they work in is safe. Any safety precautions that can be taken can only benefit the business; the employees are much more likely to be happy in their workspace – making them want to work harder and create loyalty. Plus, a safe and happy workspace will draw in new people where a company with an unsafe reputation would only drive away existing and new employees alike.

Personal safety should never take second place, and an employer should always make an effort to go the extra mile to protect their employees. In regards to brakes ins or fires – the more safety procedures they have in place, the more they protect the business as well as the employees, so it’s definitely in their interests to invest in proper safety.

Technology

Pat testing is something that would ensure the safety of all technology used within a company – basically, anything that plugs in needs to be tested. It checks that each machine is working properly and at no risk of malfunctioning. And one of those malfunctions could easily see a computer sparking nad going up in flames, or a piece of heavy machinery going haywire and hurting a worker.

Another piece of safety that a company should have in place with their technology revolves around the servers used. Each employee has a file detailing their home addresses, contact details, bank account details and every other piece of information that is put on an application. And that file sits within a server on company property. Even if the building has round the clock security, that server can be accessed from anywhere in the world by a hacker. A company should have both an anti-virus and a server-protection software in operation to keep employee details safe.

Fire

Each business has to abide by certain fire safety rules, but just following the minimum isn’t going the extra mile to keep employees safe. Fire escape routes should be just as safe as the rest of the building, safety guard rails should be in action along each route, and the appropriate extinguishers at regular points within the building. Additional fire blankets can be stored in all kitchen areas, and a well-reactive sprinkler system should be installed. This may seem like an overhaul, but seeing as most offices, warehouses and stores are relatively open plan, a fire can spread incredibly quickly and the smoke will kill as much as the flames.

Which is why having regular fire safety drills is so important. Appointing fire marshals will help to keep everything under control until the fire services can arrive, and having trained first aiders will do the same until the ambulance arrives.
